There are about a thousand salespeople, some of which have little to no web experience, now selling search engine marketing and search engine optimization services. One of the most prominent ones is the same company that puts out a giant yellow print publication.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with these companies and their salespeople trying to make a buck by branching out, they are fairly late to the game. I had the pleasure of having a close friend of mine "conference me in" on a pitch from one of these salesmen, and while he seemed like a nice guy, he could not answer any of my friend's more detailed tech questions. Aside from spouting buzzwords such as: geo-targeting, SEO, SEM, google maps, etc. the individual could not go into detail when quizzed about any of the above topics. Why?
Because the salesperson makes the sale and passes the account off the the person who does the actual work. There's nothing wrong with that, but wouldn't you like to have the option of being able to actually TALK TO the person working on your account and managing your Adwords campaign(s)? For what they charge, I sure would love to be able to meet the person doing the actual work.
My point? I feel like my customers value the fact that I am the one performing whatever updates or adjustments they require, rather than it taking up to 2 weeks to pass through some corporate behemoth's chain of command to the actual tech who is assigned to your site (and probably hundreds of others).
